How to Add Alpha from another layer to existing layer
on Mar 15, 2017 at 6:23:54 pm

I would love to find out how to use a random layer in the composition as a track matte without having to duplicate it, reorganize the layer stack, and set as a new track matte.

This is definitely a bonus of Node based software, but is there any way to achieve it in AE? I know how to "set channels", but that doesn't merge the two alphas AND it doesn't take the new alpha based on that layers position in the comp.

Any tips?

Try the Set Matte Effect.

Thanks Dave.

Unfortunately since the footage/comps are different sizes the mattes don't line up in relation to how they are placed in the comp (even with stretch to fit OFF). As well it appears to error and turn off continuously rasterize on the base layer even after the effect is erased.

Any other clever tips?

Unless your matte is a vector image, no. If it was vector, you could scale it up in a precomp & collapse transformations..... carefully.

Ahh too bad. I was really hoping there was some middle ground options for re-using existing alpha's like node-based that I'd overlooked for years.

Thanks for your reply.
