Particles cut off by layer's bounding box in CC
on Jan 6, 2017 at 8:55:08 pm

Hi - I have a compatibility issue between different AE versions, and I'm hoping that someone out there understands why...

I created an effect in CS5 where I have a text layer with a CC Particle Systems II effect. I checked the "Source Alpha Inheritance" option, making the particles emit from the text. The particles float off the characters and everything is dandy. But when I open the project in CC2015, I notice the particles will emit from the text as before, but they get cut off as they float outside the text layer's bounding box. Below is an image of my effect, with the CS5 view on top, and CC2015 view on the bottom - notice the particles get cut off at the top of the text, because they are floating upward.

Does anyone know of a reason for this change in Creative Cloud, or way to get around it? I appreciate any input you can give me.

Also... I need to do this all on one layer, I'm not looking to use a 3rd party plugin, and CC Particle World does not emit from the alpha channel of the layer. Thanks.

Just another example of what I'm talking about... Apparently this is happening with many different effects that I created.

This is a text layer that I converted to 3D using the Shatter effect method. In CS5 I could view it any angle and it looked great, but in CC, if I rotate it a bit, you can see how it gets cut off. I'm really hoping there's a simple setting somewhere to expand the bounding box. I do all my work in CS5, so I don't know CC very well. Does any one know what's causing this?

what exact CC2015 version? full numbers? make sure it's up to date. CC2015.3 should be 13.8.1 and CC2015 should be 13.7.1 or 13.7.2 on Mac

UPDATE (with fix):
I was mistaken on that second image I posted - that wasn't a CC issue, it was an issue for all versions. As far as I can tell, this is only a problem the with the CC Particle Systems II effect. For whatever reason, the particles get cut off by the edges of the layer in CC, but not in CS5.
Anyway, in case anyone runs into the same problem, I figured out that some effects, when put before the CC Particle Systems II effect, seem to expand the layer's boundaries to the edges of the comp and fixes the problem. The effect I'm using is a "CC Composite" effect, because it's fast and it doesn't effect my text layer. A "Glow" effect and "Turbulent Displace" effect (with "Amount" turned to 0) also do the trick.

Also try the grow bounds effect placed before the cc particle effect.

Interesting, I didn't know abut Grow Bounds. It didn't work for me in this case, but it definitely seems like it will come in handy in the future. Thanks for the response.
