Using particles to create a blur effect
on Sep 1, 2016 at 1:52:20 am

Alright, that's a nightmarishly convoluted title. Here's what I'm trying to do:

My character is creating a sonic blast, as characters in After Effects are wont to do. To create this image, I want the space ahead of her fist blur.

I used Particle Systems II to create a particle vortex in the direction I want it to go, all of it colored a bright lime green that is nowhere else in the clip.

Then I recomposed the effect and, in a new composition, have it overlayed the original footage.

So, what I'm trying to do is replace the lime green particle vortex with a blur effect that exists only where the particles are.

Any ideas?

Use the rendered particle layer as a track matte on a duplicated footage layer (the one with the actor) and blur to your heart's content.

Dope, that did the trick. Thanks.
