Apply Text on a picket fence
on Jul 30, 2016 at 3:05:55 am

I would like to apply a light text overlay to a grayish wooden fence and would like to avoid text in the spaces between the wooden planks. Using any of the blend settings, in the blend mode, doesn't avoid text in the spaces.

The end result would be text only on the wood.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Add subtract masks where the spaces are. Like a regular masks, but switch the mode from "Add" to "Subtract."

Thank you for your quick response.
I had thought of using a mask but was hoping for an easier solution, failed to mention the text is parented to a camera tracker, which means there is much work to be done.
"No effort, no gain"
Again, thank you.

If the text layer is 3D and the shot has been tracked and the text properly placed on the surface of the fence, it should stick in place, including the masks.

Thanks for your follow-up.

I went back and applied the camera tracking positions to the text layer and all works just dandy.

When I added mask for each fence gap (5x), they drifted over time, even though the mask were on the text layer (3D layer)...

I even started over by creating the mask on the text layer before applying the 3d positions...no improvement.

I'm sure you're right about the mask following the text, but I seem to be missing something??? Maybe the paths should have the Positions applied, if possible?

Again, thanks for your continued interest and suggestions.

The text must still drift, for the masks will stay firmly with the text.

You can turn off all other layers so that you have just the text and the camera and preview the masked text to verify this. If there is drift between the text and the mask, there's something additional animated that shouldn't be.

I started from square one and everything works as you have indicated.
User error must have been the issue...
Thank you for your patience and suggestions.
