Recreate suminagashi effects in After Effects...

Hi,

Recently I've come across this page:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/32448117/Basspixel-Artist-Identity
https://www.behance.net/gallery/30857509/Two-Tone-Event-Identity

Which is a digitally recreated version of the traditional japanese floating ink art which you can see an example here:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/34192723/Suminagashi-Marble

The artist in the first link said he created this effect digitally using "using particle simulation and then displacement techniques". The "displacement" is most likely simply the Turbulent Displace effect in AE, however, I'd really like to know how to create the actual marble effect using "particle simulation" as he said...

Does anyone have any idea how to recreate this?

You could come darned close by using a combination of the Fractal Noise and Colorama effects, I bet.
