Aimating plastic pets?

Hello Creative cow community!
I\'m really in need of some help. I know my way around After Effects, but this project in particular has completely stumped me. I\'ve given a link to the original YouTube video in which this technique is used at the end of this post.

It\'s cute, huh? Kind of creepy, but overall very well done. From what I know, the user has animated 2D images of these plastic animals. What has me stuck is the eye movement, blinking, mouth opening and closing, and the sharp movements of the body. While I do know my way around AE, beginner-talk would be much obliged.
Thank you!

This looks like a job for Crazy Talk:

You just shoot a still of the model you want to animate, or a still grabbed from a 3D package, setup the eyes and mouth, and pick key facial points to animate, then put in a script. It works quite well.
