Removing cranes in footage
on Mar 20, 2014 at 12:36:47 pm

Hi, please could someone suggest what would be the best way to remove the cranes in the footage below?

I would key out the sky and replace it, and maybe track a mask to rid the cranes? How would I do this?

Thanks in advance

Try following this tutorial from Video Copilot. The only difference would be, to remove the cranes, just mask them out (if this is a locked off shot - you don't say whether it is or not):

Yes sorry this is a moving shot so i cant have a fixed mask.

The sky isnt a problem its more getting rid of the cranes without having to manually move a mask frame by frame. Any ideas?

Thanks again

It's not clear how you'd track it, since I have no idea what the shot is doing - if it's a flyover, the mask would have to be constantly changing shape, but tracking appears to be the way to go. If it's just a camera move or zoom, say on a tripod, just mask the hard edges of the roof lines, and then do a track with your mask layer as the target. This may help you out:

OK great thanks. You can actually track a mask within a layer to a null?

please see the clip here for clarity -

What im also finding hard it crisply keying the sky out.

If it looks good, look at it.

Could the cranes be removed in photoshop, through its video options?
Sorry to butt in here.

Don't be sorry, Wallis - it's a good suggestion, and if the tracked mask doesn't work, it may be one of the only two alternatives, the first being the Clone Brush in AE, the second being frame by frame in Photoshop.
