Smoothing a hyperlapse
on Jan 9, 2015 at 5:18:50 pm

I'm working on a hyperlapse video, moving past an old mill as people walk by in front. For the most part it's working well, but then parts of the building will warp as the camera moves. I've tried reducing the smoothing value in the effect, but that just makes the video more jumpy. I've also tried the difference between perspective, position-scale-rotation, and subspace warp in Methods (within the effect controls). Do you have any suggestions for smoothing out the effect without causing the building to warp?

Thanks!

Can you upload a sample of the footage so that I can take a look at it in more detail? Sometimes a hands on approach will allow me to figure out settings that will work.

Will do! Do you need a copy of the file, or just somewhere you can view it like on YouTube?

You can do either, just be sure to send me the same quality you are using. I can download videos from YouTube using keepvid.com. Or you can email me or post a link to a download site or the file itself if it isn't too big.

Here's the link for the video. Let me know if you have difficulty accessing it.

Well Heck,
this looks like a job for Mocha's planar tracker/stabilizer. Here is a webinar that goes into detail how it works. https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/mocha-stabilize-webinar/

You should have access to it through AE.

(Unfortunately) Since you don't like the results of the Warp Stabilizer, I would go redo the stabilization using Mocha. I think you'll be able to get some solid results trying that. (I wouldn't go and delete what you have, but at the very least try a new project with it.)

I appreciate the advice, thank you! I hadn't thought to look into Mocha for this, so I'll look at the webinar and let you know how it goes!
