3d axis not visable

When I click the 3d icon in the timeline the tutorial says I should see red, green and blue arrows in the composition. These do not show up. What have I missed?

Is the layer in question highlighted? That's the only way you'll see those arrows.

Yes, it is highlighted. No arrows in the composition.

Are you looking at the layer in the Layer window rather than the Comp window? It opens when you double-click on a layer.

If you're sure you're in the comp, you may have just turned off their visibility. On the side of the timeline there should be a little wing-out button; I believe there should be a command in there to turn it back on. I'm not in front of my AE machine to check.

The arrows show up on the lower left side but the tutorial shows them in the middle of the panel along with the anchor point. I see neither in the panel itself, just the arrows at the left lower edge. Visabilaty is on.

There are two differnet kinds of 3D axes: those attached to a layer to show you which way it is oriented, and those associated with a viewer, to show you which way the world is oriented.

See this page:
"Show or hide 3D axes and layer controls"

Check your view options. While in the Comp viewer (make sure it's the active pane) go to View > View Options and make sure that the upper section has its checkboxes in order.
