Write-on Effect with straight edge?
on Nov 23, 2010 at 5:41:16 pm

Hi There,

I'm trying to get a thick multi-colored (rainbow-like) curvy line to "draw itself in" in AE. I created the line using a custom brush in Illustrator, and then brought it into AE

I can use the Write-on effect, but that always gives me a rounded edge. I want to straight edge.

In a perfect world, i could import my custom brush into AE and then use the Stroke effect to make it "draw" around the screen. Is this possible?

Sadly, AE doesn't allow you to use custom brushes. If you look in the Paint effect, you may find a brush setting that's close, and that you can use with brush position information from Write-On.

OK Thanks much! So what do you recommend for "drawing on a curvy shape" . If I use the write-on effect, i get a rounded edge.

if i use a mask, then getting a smooth animation is difficult.

Paste the Write-On brush position data into the Paint brush position data; I haven't personally tried it, but I think it'll work.

If you use a shape layer for this, you can set the end of the stroke to use a butt cap.
