Render and RAM preview slow problem
on Jun 7, 2016 at 7:18:40 am

Hi, this is my first time writing in here beacuse so far you always has answered my issues to someone else. However this time I couldn't found something that helps me.

My problema is that I built my own PC for video editing and 3D animation.
In the 3D aspects so far so good, but for some reason when is about after effects it’s seems something is wrong.
I have and “old” Asus g74sx whitch work faster in render and ram preview than my new PC in After Effects. This is just going me insane!!

My build PC have the next components:

GraphicCard: Asus Strix GTX 980
Processor: Intel i7 5820K 3.30GHz
RAM: 32 Gb (DDR4)
HardDrive: SSD 480 GB + HDD 4TB
PowerSupply: Coinstar AX860
Motherboard: MSI 99X Raider
OS: Windows 10 (64-bits)
Adobe: CC 2015

I mean… it looks better for me than my old laptop. Did I made something wrong combining this components or something about my drivers? So far I’ve tried this:

-I re-installed my CS6 after effects to see if was the typical CC 2015 issuses but both works slow.
-I also enable CUDA with the “change the read file” trick.
-Updated my Graphic card drivers.
-Off curse raised up all in AE preferences

Something curious is that it doesnt matter if I preview in Full Resolution or in quarters the speed is basicaly the same.
Does anybody can help me?

What is it that you're actually trying to do? How are you comparing the speed between the two computers?

I ran the same AE projects in both computers.
The frame rate for RAM preview was the same or slightly higher in the old one.

What happens if you clear the caches on both machines? Are you comparing the exact same software versions on each machine? What are the viewer, memory/multiprocessing and preview settings on each machine?

I'm comparing the exact same files in the latest version of After Effects CC 2015 in both.
Clean the chache didn't do anything.

New:
Viewer> Adaptative resolution
Memory (no multiprossesing option available)> 28.3gb RAM available for AE, reduce cache unchecked.
Preview settings> Adaptative resolution 1/16, GPU 3.25 GB (enable but unsupported for CUDA), zoom and color managment:Faster

Old:
Viewer> Adaptative resolution
Memory (no multiprossesing option available)> 13gb RAM available for AE, reduce cache unchecked.
Preview settings> Adaptative resolution 1/8, GPU (unsupported) 2.84 GB (enable but unsupported for CUDA), zoom and color managment: Faster

Can you describe the project? What kinds of footage? What kinds of effects? How long does the same comp take to render to the same output module on each system?

I'm testing with two differents project.
The first one is a 45 seconds composition with four 3D pre-rendered 4K layers with alpha channel at 30fps. Three of the layers are in multiply mode.
It takes 13 minutes to render in the new one and almost 11 in the old one.

The second Is a 18 seconds 4K live shoot at 24 fps with an overlayed cgi pre-rendered baseball bate and 7 video compilot blood splashes in multiply and darker mode traked into a wall.
It takes around 9 min in the old one and almost 12 in the new one.

These sound footage-heavy. Is there a speed difference between your new storage and your old storage?

Wow that is heavy? I really didn't consider that way..
About my storage, not really.
The old one have an hdd 7200 RPM and the new one have a ssd (550 mb/s) and a hdd 7200 RPM.
I tried to render the project from both hard drives (the ssd and the hdd) with no difference.

If I can't solve this I'll wait till the new version of after effects. They say will improve the preview speed.

About what Hanna says I'm focusing right now to accelerate the Ram preview because that's what is bothering me now.
