After Effects, Beam and Square caps?!
on Nov 25, 2015 at 4:59:50 pm

Hey CC Community!

First off, thank you for all the help over the years. You have solved many head aches!

My problem: AE's Beam and it's round cap. Is there any way to make a butt cap (square, not round)?
I've tried all sorts of tricks; using Mattes to square the end, for example- unfortunately this doesn't work with my rig.

A work around would be to use a shape layer line, but I can't find a way of attaching the end of the points to a null.

Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,
Simon

I can't think of any good way to do it, especially if you use those inner color/outer color & feather settings.

You could TRY to use a solid as a track matte, which uses the same starting and ending points as the beam and moves at the same speed at the beam animates, but even with a feathered edge, it's still going to look goofy.

1) Use a shape layer or solid instead of beam. Use trigonometry and expressions to draw the line from one point to another by anchoring at the first point and rotating/scaling it out to the second point.

2) Check out BAO Mask Avenger [link] to get control of the individual points of a mask/shape.

Thank you both for your response, it's much appreciated.

Mask avenger looks very useful. Before I purchase, would I be able to attach shape path points to nulls via the plug in?

Thanks again,
Simon

[Simon Tibbs] "Mask avenger looks very useful. Before I purchase, would I be able to attach shape path points to nulls via the plug in?"

It also comes with BAO Shape Avenger. Try the demo to make sure it's what you want.
