Creating a straight line after a curve
on Oct 23, 2015 at 10:16:14 am

Hello everyone,

I'm having a bit of trouble with After Effects, where i'm masking the letter "S", and then I go to make a straight line after all the curves, it automatically adds a curve... (yes, even with rotobezier off).

I can use the pen tool fine in all the other adobe applications, but I cant seem to find an option like Photoshop's ALT+Click.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Thanks!
- Ryan.

Rather than Alt+clicking a new point, start to drag out your Bezier handle, then press Alt before releasing the button. This will break the tangent and allow you to go from curved to straight.

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working.

Is it perhaps because I'm on a mac?

I'm on a Mac today, too. Make sure Roto-Bezier is off. Activate the pen tool. Click down to make a point, drag to extend the bezier handles, release to make the first point.

Click down to make the next point, drag to extend the bezier handles, then without release the mouse button yet, hold Alt/Option to break the tangents and continue to drag. Pull the separated bezier handle back to the original point to shorten the handle and give you room to work. Now release the mouse button.

Click to make the third point. It will be a straight line off the end of the curve.

Ohh, I was just hitting alt, then letting go of mouse button haha, I had no idea you had to still drag.

I appreciate it man, have a good weekend.

- Ryan.
