How to reset beginning time for a clip
on Oct 22, 2015 at 7:23:07 pm

After Effects CS6. Many times, all I am doing is rendering a portion of a file and saving to a new file. However, when I close the file I extracted from (I do not save as a project) and load the file I rendered to, the starting current time is not 0:00:00:00 but is the beginning frame of the extract from the original file.

A simple example would be:

I open a 5 minute File01.flv in AE, drag it to create a composition, set the Beginning at 0:02:00:00 and eNd at 0:3:00:00, a one minute clip and render to Clip01.mp4. I close without saving as a project. I then open Clip01.mp4 and drag to create a composition. I am expecting the starting time to be 0:00:00:00 but it is 0:02:00:00. How do I "fix" this? I don't see anything in render options or other options.

Thanks for the help - David

There's no fix... well, no GOOD fix.

You'd have haul out a time code calculator to adjust the comp's beginning time time code so the desired part would start at zero. And that's a pain.

Now, there are applications that let you alter time code on clips. I've never used one. I just know they exist.

Thanks Dave. Sounds like that's the intended behavior, so AE must encode into the file. Any idea why it does that?

No clue why. Frankly, I've never even looked into it. It's a non-issue for me.
