Is there a simple way to mimic a DNA helix rotating with a 2D image?

Not enough info. Is the helix itself created as 3D in something like c4d? Is it a 2D movie which is rotating?

I'd go back and add the 2D element to that looping thing in the application in which it was created... It'll be a lot easier there than in AE.

this is what I got so far by spinning the logo and using a comera to balance out the wobbles - is this as good as it gets without deconstructing the image itself?

Aw, that's too bad you don't have the thing in 3D. You're missing a lot. I thought you were dealing with something created in a 3D application which rotated, and around which you wanted something in 2D to rotate, synced up with the helix's rotation.

If this is a logo for a client, you may want to show what you have so far, then recommend that it be animated in 3D -- the circles become little balls, the pointy things become little cones, what have you. If you can't do it yourself, you could act as middleman.

If that's too pricey, I'd look at altering the layer's 3D anchor point so you can get it to rotate properly on the long axis. You wouldn't have to mess with animating a camera.

You're right, it would look way better in 3D
I just recently started taking on little freelance gigs, communication has been a problem.
After the client saw that 2D video he pointed me to a 3D animaited gif
redesigning the helix in c4d
