After Effects Alpha Channel Trouble

I created an alpha layer with a fire-breathing dragon. It all looks fine until I go to export it.

I have chosen QuickTime as the output and chosen RGB + Alpha.

No dragon.

Can anyone help?

Thank you so much!

Let me expand a bit on what I have here. I rotoscoped the dragon from a black background in a .mov file. All looked great--the background was transparent, and the dragon moved fine, while open in AE.

At first, I had just the dragon on the transparent background. I couldn't export it despite trying many codecs and being sure to use the RGB + Alpha setting.

So I decided I'd bring in the background in which I wanted the dragon to fly over, thinking that if I put it all together in AE, it'd work. This is rather than exporting just the dragon and then going over to Final Cut to put it together.

Ok, so that was stupid, because now I have the same problem. I can't figure out what the problem is with my disappearing dragon!

Thanks so much for your help! I hope I can get this right! It's been hours and hours!

Have you accidentally set your dragon as a guide layer [link]?

Failing that, can you post a screenshot of your UI so we can see what you do?

You also need to render to a quicktime codec that supports alpha channels. The common ones are PNG, Animation and ProRes 4444.

Wow! Walter! Thanks! That was the problem. It was a guide layer for some reason! Both my teacher and I were wondering what that blue little numbers sign was.

You saved my life! Really really appreciate it. Let me know if I can give you a shout out or positive review somewhere.
