Lightning flashes for a scene shot without lighting effects

I'm editing a film and decided rather late in the game to add some atmosphere of thunder and lightning. Had I thought of this during preproduction the DP would have just put together a nice little flash effect to interact with the scene. However, now I'm stuck with doing something passable for about five moments in the scene and don't really want to deal with recreating the scene in 3D so the light depth is correct etc.
Basically I have a mix of medium shots and wides in a period location with actors in period garb. Is it just a matter of doing a little roto and glow work and varying the opacity depending on the object on screen?
If anyone has some examples or cheats for this I'd be much obliged.
Thanks,

There are some tips/tricks you could use from this set of tutorials(older, but techniques still work). Weather Replacement
