random text letter position
on Feb 13, 2014 at 10:34:47 pm

Hello all!

I don't know if the answer to my question is a potential plug-in or expression... or just a pipe dream, so here goes...

I want to be able to type a word, and then slightly randomize the position of each letter, specifically on the Y axis, giving it a bit more punk look or attitude.

This is a "logo" (using that term loosely) just being built in AE CC for a spec, that's why I'm not building in PS or AI. Plus, I can type on the letters if I want, which I'm leaning towards.

I'm not necessarily looking to animate the letters, but if that gets me to the end result that's fine, I can work with that.

Short of typing each letter and manually positioning it, is there a more elegant solution to this?

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

You might want to look at Digital Anarchy's plugin called Text Anarchy.

This is actually really simple.

- Create your text layer
- Add a position animator
- Change the Y value of the position animator to however much of a range you want the letters to vary
- Add a wiggly selector (from the same menu as the animators) and delete the range selector
- Turn wiggles per second to 0 (otherwise it animates)
- If you want to see different variations, just change the number in the random seed.

"|_ (°_0) _|"
