 | changing contents of precomp

Hi All
Have 36 multiple copies of a precomp which were used to make design decisions in 3D space .
Now that am happy with positions need to change the contents to 36 separate clips but I just cant get it to work......I think I know the theory but am missing something.....
Each comp is sructured thus
1) Precomp 1 consisting of image with matte
2) Pre-comp 1 then has a 90 degree rotation added plus a y axis animation so that the image travels up towards the viewer this is then precomped as precomp 2.
3 )Precomp 2 was then copied 36 times and variously positioned in 3D space
The idea was to copy precomp 1 from the assets panel ( top left ) / change contents / precomp / then copy and paste positional info from one of the test comps ( which is then deleted ).
However seems that whatever I do all 36 change.
Any idea what I'm missing please ? ---- or maybe some info on the exact way of making a new copy from a comp in the project panel ...
...whatever ...
... any clues much appreciated -----chris brett --

If you duplicated precomp 2, 36 times, you need to also need 36 duplicates of precomp 1 and replace each instance of precomp 1 with the new duplicate in the precomp 2 duplicates.
So you have Precomp 2-1, should have Precomp1-1 in it.
Precomp 2-2, Precomp 1-2
Precomp 2-3, Precomp 1-3 and so on.

Maybe this helps:
Publicate the PreComp / change the content / ALT-Click in Projekt window, hold down and drog over the PreComp you want to replace / let go
i hope this is helpfull!
