World Position Pass ?
on Apr 1, 2013 at 6:32:08 pm

Hello,

is it possible to use a World Position Pass without the use of any plugins inside After Effects ?

If so, any tutorials that shows and explains how it works ?

Thank you very much !

[Bernhard Rieder] "is it possible to use a World Position Pass without the use of any plugins inside After Effects ?"

Use it to do what exactly? The pass itself is just image data. It's what you do with that image data that can make things interesting.

That said I'm not aware of any AE plug-ins that would use a world position pass and there aren't many good reasons I can think of to try and use one in vanilla AE. You could use it the same way you'd use any other image. Maybe you'd be able to create some interesting mattes with it?

Is there something specific you're hoping to do?

Check out Pixel Cloud [link].

It's a third-party plug-in, not a native solution, but it's the first thing I'd go to for using a position pass in Ae.

yes... the wpp can help you for masking and positioning compositing elements to a specific world space coordinate.

it's used in comping software packages like nuke or fusion.
just have not seen it yet in AE - without using any plugins.

Andrew K. just brought out his plugin and he is using the wpp as well.
But my question was: How to use it inside AE without any 3rd party plugin ?

thx a lot

To do what specifically?

Unlike Nuke, Ae doesn't have a native concept of point clouds. That's why you need the plugin to do anything useful with a position pass.

I see.. I guess that's the issue with AE, that it doesn't really support the true point cloud data.

But thx for posting the link to the plugin, looks very promising !
Appreciate that !

[Bernhard Rieder] "just have not seen it yet in AE - without using any plugins."

Again, it's just an image. AE does natively support images :)

There isn't anything super special about a position pass, the value is in what you or an application does with the data in the pass.

AE can't do anything fancy with the data in the position pass out of the box, but with plug-ins or some color correction or even expressions you can still use the data to some effect.

Perhaps if you described exactly what you wanted to achieve with the position pass we could help.

Yes! I actually have software specifically dedicated to this, that will soon be an After Effects plug-in.

Check out ChrisVranos.com for all the videos, or skip right to this one to get right to it.

Unfortunately the plug-in isn't readily available yet, still working on it.
