AE CS6: Overlaying video on a phone, even when hand is in front of screen

Hi guys,

I'm part of a startup for a smartphone application called Breadcrumbs and I'm in charge of creating the marketing video. In our marketing video, we want to show the app working in a user's hand but we know that to get the vid really bright, clear, and quick, we'll need to simulate the app post-production. I've been going through tutorials and doing the X-Spline Layers, however, I'm not quite sure what to do. As the video tracks forward, I'm not sure if it's my hand or the fact that the app has a lot of motion in it, but the layer is no longer around the screen within a few seconds of running real time.

Questions:
1.) How do I get a hand in front of the video without obstructing it?
Example of a good app video:

Screenshot of me with my thumb in front of my phone (haha): http://i45.tinypic.com/2q8wug9.png

2.) Noob question, but I'm trying to also do what they do with the buttons and layout in the video below and I'm not sure where to start (EX: How all of the buttons are just popping up from nothing)

Thanks for your help all. I'm starting from scratch, but the help of Creative Cow + YouTube has been really awesome.

Hi Sean -

I would suggest that you use the Rotobrush in AE for this - I've had very good luck with this type of shot using the Rotobrush - (http://bourkemedia.com/video-gallery/). Take a look at the first video in the gallery, Waters Roto/Track. The notebook in the first shot had a logo on the bottom of it, so I had to Roto the hand. The hand in front of the computer screen was Roto'd over a replaced and tracked screen (using Camera Tracker for AE, from The Foundry).

Do a couple of tutorials on RotoBrush and you'll be good to go. Here's one from Lynda.com:

There are also plenty of freebies out there that get into more depth, but the Lynda one should get you there.

Awesome, Joseph. I learned a little bit about the rotobrush but I never thought of using it unless trying to create a sort of green screen effect. Thanks!
