Backwards Compatability Is Here!
on Feb 6, 2012 at 10:32:58 pm

Holy heck! It happened!
The wonderful Paul Tuersley has been working for months (if not over a year) on a script that brings backwards compatibility to After Effects, exporting projects that can be opened in any version from CS3 or later.

Of note, projects are exported as human readable text files that can also be edited in a text editor or spreadsheet in various ways, such as changing text layers, colors, footage and file paths. As Adobe's Todd Kopriva points out [link], this is huge for automation and other workflows!

[LINK] Go here to buy this useful script unless, like me, you don't have a use for it. But even though I don't have a use for it, I know lots of other people have been looking for this.

Michael,

I'd bet that you do have a use for this script.

For example, see this:
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/20164#20164

Having access to a text representation of the project is _huge_.

No, Paul isn't giving my a cut of his profits. ;-)

The more I think about it, the more I think that nobody has even scratched the surface of what you could do with his script.

[Michael Szalapski] "The more I think about it, the more I think that nobody has even scratched the surface of what you could do with his script."

Agreed 100%. I can't overstate how much this expands AE's capabilities.

A bit of an off-topic diversion: FCP's addition of XML opened it up for all kinds of third-party tools and in-house automation, and when FCPX was released without XML support, the industry realized just how reliant it had become on that interchange.

AE has had scripting, but has lacked real interchange (AE's XML is loaded with binary blobs, so I found it useless for automation). This is a major, major step forward.

Many thanks to Paul for his hard work.
