DNxHD - custom formats possible?
on Nov 10, 2011 at 11:25:50 am

Hi,

First post here, but have been helped many times by you all so thanks already.

I have to output a Quicktime for a projection mapping project. As such the resolution is quite specific. 3220x1834 @ 30fps

I work on Windows so don't have easy access to the Mac-centric ProRes 422 which I used last year. DNxHD it seems is the best equivalent that's easy to access, so.....

Is it possible to output DNxHD formats at custom resolutions (and fps?).

Many thanks,

Adam.

Unfortunately no. Perhaps you will want to look at H264 as a delivery format. I forsee that you will require a fair bit of testing to get the right datarate and quality.

Hi Roland,

Thanks for a nice straight answer.

The footage has to run through a program call Watchout. The projection company has recommended I try Photo Jpeg as an alternative. Big files here we come.

Thanks,

Adam.

Hi Adam, Watchout systems love MPEG-2 files, encoded with a GOP setting of 1 (you can achieve this with AME by setting Keyframe Distance to 1). A bitrate of 5MBPS to 10 MBPS should do the trick BUT it all depends on the playback machine.

For live events, it's always a good idea to ask for a sample file from the vendor so that you can view its innards. PPro allows you to view decent pieces of info such as the file's bitrate.

Further, it is best to split the file into smaller chunks - perhaps 2 equal sizes. You may want to check with Walter, who's very good with Dataton's Watchout systems. You can also find Walter at the COW's Live Events forum.

Hi,

great info thanks. AME can be quite handy, must remember to pay more attention to it. I've sent the info on to see whath the projection guys think.

We'll be splitting the movie into 6 parts, one for each projector.

27k pre-rendered frames to encode, there goes the weekend.

Adam.

It's always good to be able to test a short sequence to ensure that the comp dimensions, CODEC and bitrate are in order. Once, these are working, proceed with the larger, actual sequence.
