Mocha, What am I doing wrong (Video Included)
on Oct 6, 2011 at 1:58:33 am

Hey All I'm on CS5, Im trying to track a ipad with a green screen bye corner pining with mocha. Im having a insane issue doing this, When ever I stop tracking and adjust the Surface points, Mocha changes the WHOLE thing not just the 1 fame I need to fix. I've spent hours trying to figure this out?

When a track goes awry, you do not manipulate the Surface, you should instead manipulate the tracking spline shapes.

The Surface is where you define the area that you will be exporting. When you export, you have a choice of either Transform or Corner Pin data.

The Surface area does not affect what Mocha tracks. It is the shapes defined by your X or B-splines that tells Mocha what to track. Hence, when you re-define your Surface on a single frame, the duration of the track is affected by this change. Mocha thinks that the new Surface is what you want to export, hence the entire duration of the track is affected.

What you should do instead is to adjust the tracking shapes.

Further, your track goes awry when the rotation kicks in. This is where you manipulate the Rotation parameter. Adding Rotation adds to the tracking time. Therefore, you can start with a value of 0 and then dial in a value just as the rotation starts. You then re-set Rotation down to 0 once the rotation is completed.

You can watch a related tutorial here - http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/mocha-pro-tracking-large-rotation/vi...

so it moves 90' clockwise, i set a key frame from where it starts to rotate and where it ends?

[Greg Burke] "so it moves 90' clockwise, i set a key frame from where it starts to rotate and where it ends?"

When I mentioned Rotation, I obviously meant Mocha's Angle parameter. ;-)

If you had a look at the tutorial I mentioned earlier, you would have realized that the value for your Angle is essentially : degrees of rotation divided by number of frames. So, with your specific situation, it's a 90 degree rotation divided by the number of frames this amount of rotation occurred to derive your required Angle value.

You could of course simply matters and key in the Angle value from the start of the track. What I suggested in the earlier post was to allow you to optimize the tracking time.

Take note that Mocha doesn't provide a visual keyframe for Angle, as it does for its tracking shapes. I'll have to go into a tutorial mode to cover that, which I'm not inclined to as I have issues to attend to on my end. But I'm sure that you now have enough from myself and the previously linked tutorial to help you solve this issue as well as other similar issues that you will face.

BTW Greg, since nothing encroaches into the green area, a black screen would have been a better approach as this will allow you to use the highlights and reflections that it gathers naturally. The trick is to ensure that there is sufficient texture/shape for Mocha to track while the screen is in 'dark mode'.

That's not a very good tutorial in terms of how to use the tools as well as the end-result. Not only is it evident that the person is lacking in Mocha skills but the AE skills are also lacking.

Stick to Mocha tutorials here at the COW and at the Imagineer Systems sites as I can vouch for these but anywhere else and things can get dodgy.

BTW, how did you do with your track?
