Quick query regarding 3d objects in AE
on Sep 4, 2011 at 1:16:00 pm

Hello

I am a cinema 4d user and I've been using after effects recently.

I've used the tracker to do a 4-point perspective corner pin and you can turn a flat plane into "3d space" so it looks like you have a piece of paper in the footage.

However, being a 3d modeller I'm interested in how you would get a 3d object into some footage (currently my desk).

Would I:
a) have to produce it from c4d?
b) have to produce it from AE?
c) is it a mixture of both? such as exporting 3d data from AE and then using c4d to render...

I'm very intrigued about this whole subject right now so any advice, links would be grateful.

Thanks

You can export camera data from one to the other, so you can track camera data in AE using Camera Tracker from The Foundry, export that to C4d, build your object there, render with alpha and comp back in AE.

Is that the industry standard way of doing 3d objects in AE?

I just want to know the general way people do these things...

Cheers.

With C4D that would be pretty much it. There's other ways of doing this- some folks use Maya, I use a lot Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro and other 3rd party plugins that do 3d in AE like FreeForm Pro and ShapeShifter AE.
Here's one of my latest projects - all 3d in AE (except modeling):

Thanks man, that video looks great.

I'm trying to get a realistic looking object to sit on my desk from some video footage taken from my iPod.

Wondering if you know some basic steps for this? or any tutorials?

Cheers.

Track the footage of your desk. If it's a static shot or one where the camera moves in and out or sideways only, then you can track 2d with Mocha. Render a still of your 3d object with alpha and comp in using track data. Here's a good tutorial:

For more complex camera moves, where there is heavy perspective change, track using a 3d tracker, like Camera Tracker from the Foundry. Export the camera data to C4D, create your object there, render the camera animation with alpha for the object, bring in AE and comp.

Here's a good tutorial for the Voodoo/Blender option (free):

Hope it helps.
