Convert from MS DV (PAL) to QT DV (PAL) - Recompression?
on Jun 24, 2011 at 1:05:30 pm

Hi all

I need to port some DV files from Win to Mac.

The files are in MS-DV format (AVI) and since I can't locate a MS-DV codec for QT (any pointers here ?), it seems the only option left to me is to reexport as QT DV from within AE.

I'm dreading the answer to this, but am I right in assuming that this will involve a decompression/recompression cycle?

Thanks.

There's no need to compress it. Simply use Media Encoder or something similar and transcode your footage to a lossless codec. (Huge file sizes will unfortunately result.)

There may be proper codecs for Mac though. I'd look for that first.

No need to recompress it... DV frames are the same, for QT and AVI. So you just need to re-pack them from an AVI container to a MOV container and adujst the audio format.
On Windows/Linux FFMPEG is a good choice. The command-line would look like
"C:Program FilesWinFFffmpeg.exe" -i "XXX.avi" -aspect 4:3 -vcodec copy -ar 48000 -ac 2 -acodec pcm_s16be "XXX.mov"

This conversion is lossless and leaves the video untouched.
