Lighting up dark windows of a building
on Jun 19, 2011 at 6:53:10 pm

Hello Cow people
I have a compositing question which I need advice on;
I have a piece of footage, a few seconds long of a clean pan on a building.

(I am attaching an example frame).

My task is to find a "simple" way of suggesting those dark rooms (windows) have some light inside...

I thought of something in the direction of masking the windows, lowering the opacity/ or blending and put a layer in the back that would suggest suddle light, without completely loosing the glass reflections.
(maybe even in 3D space so the back layer would react to the panning)

If anyone has a suggestion of gently lighting the inside..., I would really appreciate it.

I can definitely get a good track of those windows during that pen.

Thanks!

Why are you trying to add light- are there following shots you are trying to match to- room interiors where you have a certain kind of light? If that's the case I would start there- it would be good to have a still posted for more feedback.
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve- what you mentioned is a good way to go about it and without more info I can't be specific.

Hey Ted!
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I am trying to make it closer to the interior. But really just to give it a sense of some-kind of light inside, which is florescent office/work space like.
(here is a similar inside light)

Due to the strong sun light and the reflections on the glass, I am looking for a gentle compose, and not just "replacing"
If you have a suggestion I will be glad to hear it!
Thanks again.
Adam

I would create a simulation of the space behind the windows in 3d- just ceiling (you will see the neon squares as the brightest thing behind the window), left wall and back wall- and then cut out the windows, comp them on top with the 3d set behind, then play with transfer modes (Screen, Overlay...).

I am working in that direction.
Thanks for the reply!
