HD Athletic Asset Management and Video Storage

Good afternoon,

I am currently looking for the best solution for HD video storage and asset management for a video department that ranges from 3-6 users/editing suites. I am highly interested in an SAN system for collaboration and ease of access across all editing suites and workstations. As of now, we are using Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere and have a strong interest in asset management from a standpoint of trans-coding for best non-linear editing use and the addition of metadata for archiving purposes. I would prefer a minimum storage space of 20TB with the option to increase as needed. I am familiar with Editshare and EVO, but would like to hear some thoughts regarding other options or opinions on the difference between Editshare solutions and EVO solutions.

Thanks,

Hey Clayton,

Editshare and EVO are both good options from good companies that have been doing this a while.

Editshare is pretty comprehensive and offers Flow with their storage, Flow is very feature rich MAM software; not quite a CatDV but close. The downside (in my opinion) on Editshare is that there is no succinct interface between the shared storage and the asset management, they are more or less two separate products rolled into one server. They do offer some transcoding.

EVO is (again in my opinion) a much nicer interface than Editshare, their sharebrowser integrates the storage and MAM into a single interface. Ease of use is higher here, but capabilities will be lower compared to an Editshare. There is no transcoding on EVO. The other thing to keep in mind is EVO still uses SANmp volume locking software for most users, which only allows 1 user to write to a volume at a time, pretty much every other option on the market allows all users to read and write at the same time.

As far as other products, I'm partial to ProMAX Platform (as I do work there!), we do the single interface for Shared Storage and MAM, all file locking, with Transcoding. We also acquired Cache-A corporation and integrated their LTO software into Platform. ProMAX is the only company out there that offers Shared Storage, MAM & Backup/Archive in a single interface. If you want to check it out below is a quick link to the interface.

Good luck in your searching!

Thanks Nate, some of your information about EVO is inaccurate though. EVO is indeed 100% multi-user write file sharing. Multiple users can write at the same time to the same volume. EVO is SAN and NAS. Yes, SANmp is included if you want to use it, but, it is not necessary, not even for the most convoluted 4k/6k workflows. You may also use other 3rd party file systems (again not necessary). EVO also does transcoding.

Hey Ryan, good to know you guys are focusing on the NAS side now, that’s awesome! My understanding was that SANmp is recommended for media files and the NAS partition is used for project files. Are you guys not recommending SANmp anymore? What are there workflows that SNS recommends SANmp for, if any?

As far as transcoding goes, I didn’t see anything on the SNS website on this. Is it transcoding for proxies or for editorial/delivery? Is there a list of format support that you link the community to the info on this?

Just so I’m giving some info out as well… Platform supports transcoding for low res proxies as well as editorial/delivery. Supporting most formats like MOV wrapped DNxHR, ProRes, XD CAM, AVC Intra, H.264; MXF wrapped XDCAM, XAVC, DNxHD; and R3d etc. etc. to a variety of codecs including DNxHR and ProRes. We also have native Red to ProRes & DNxHD transcoding. It’s touched on briefly in the video at 11:04 if you want to check out some of how our interface handles it.

As far as customers using transcoding, this is from the NBA’s Pelicans, who transcode on their Platform from P2 to ProRes http://promax.com/cust_succ/platform-connects-superdome-workflows-for-nbas-...

As I haven’t read the SNS case studies in a while, if you have any user case studies for transcoding feel free to share those with the community.

You guys have a great product and I still hold a lot of fondness for EVO, glad to see you guys pushing it forward, we all need to innovate!

N

We've been implementing NAS-only solutions for media production for over 6 years now. It was SAN-only in the early years of our existence. We do both now. 4k/6k workflows on NAS was unheard-of years ago, it's a breeze for our team these days. SANmp is used when the workflow benefits - it's a great tool.

You can carve up EVO anyway you like:

NAS only
NAS and SAN
SAN only
SAN with 3rd party file system
NAS with 3rd party file system
NAS and SAN with 3rd party file system

Cost, users, current infrastructure, performance, existing hardware, support, scaleability, and backup/archive are some of the determining factors one would consider when finalizing a solution.

EVO does transcoding for proxy generation out of the box at no extra cost. We leave it to the experts and team up with Telestream and/or other 3rd party apps/partners for proper editorial/delivery transcoding.

Here are 3 case studies on our website that include transcoding as part of the workflow

http://www.studionetworksolutions.com/fox-sports/

This is a joint case study up on the Telestream website regarding a live transcoding (encoding) use case. Located here - http://www.telestream.net/pdfs/customer-case-s
