Question for those using Thunderbolt with SAN
on Aug 21, 2013 at 3:01:12 pm

I am looking to a Thunderbolt upgrade path in our current metaSAN network.

Currently, all ethernet connected computers have wifi as the internet pipe. It's ok, but it's not as ok as having wired based internet.

With Thunderbolt, it is possible to have two distinct ethernet networks on a Macbook Pro?

This way I can have the wired metadata on one network, and wired internet traffic on another.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thank you!

Jeremy

yes. the Thunderbolt Ethernet shows up as another available network connection in System Preferences in the same way 2 ethernet networks show up on Mac Pros.

the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapters can also go on the end of daisy-chains. I connected the Apple Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter to the back of a G-RAID just to see and it worked fine.

Thank you, Eric. This is good news.

I think ATTO or whoever is making Thunderbolt high speed connectors (fibre, 10GB ethernet, etc) should also put a 1 GB ethernet port along with the high speed connection.

It would be perfect to be able to run fiber and metadata right out of this one box: http://www.attotech.com/products/product.php?cat=16&scat=29&prod=100&sku=TL...

Cheers,

Jeremy

you definitely can. i have the Promise SANLink and ATTO 10GbE Thunderlink and they both daisy chain to ethernet adapters just fine

Thanks so much.

How has the reliability been on the Promise and ATTO?

They were used by other people on other projects, but they worked fine as far as I know.

I use the ATTO Thunderlink boxes all the time. They are great.
This should work perfectly for you.

Gotta 2nd what Bob said... we have quite a few of the ATTO Thunderlink adapters in our lab – both 8Gb FC and 10GbE – and they work really well. No problems.
