fiber question
on Mar 4, 2013 at 4:29:39 pm

hi all,
this is the first time i am posting in this forum and will ask few lame questions please bear with me for my little education about storage.

we have a linux resolve suite which we use mainly for commercials and now we are planning to convert it to a complete DI suite with a DOLBY monitor for film grading.
my question is:
1. Is there a need for a license to have a point to point fiber network between the linux Resolve and The mac Resolve ? (we are planning to conform on the mac resolve and grade on linux ,we have a SQL server in place for project sharing between the two resolves)

2. If it is possible to have a point to point fiber network between the two Resolves,is it possible to access the main storage which is connected to linux resolve through fiber from the mac?
3.can a linux fiber licence be used on a mac or should we buy a seperate stornext licence for mac?

hey Prathvish

congrats on the Dolby monitor. I love grading on the Dolby.

as far as i know, you cannot use fibre to connect 2 computers directly to each other to share files. if you have a Stornext system running facility-wide, then i would suggest treating both the Linux station and Mac station as individual Stornext clients, and connect them to the main fibre switch. Then keep your media on the main facility storage. I'm not a Stornext user and i can only assume that Linux and Mac systems can be used on the same fabric and storage. but i could be wrong here.

is the facility storage not fast enough, that you have to share your Mac Resolve's local storage with the Linux Resolve?

i need more details on your facility set up to give any further advice.

thanks

hi Eric,
thanks for the reply.
we have 50tb storage with 5 fiber licences and shared with two Quantel IQ pablo ,one Resolve linux, one Bones for scanning ,1 shared between three smoke premium. so our Mac Resolve just has a 1gbps ethernet and i was told that we would need a fiber licence to get the MAC resolve connected to the storage .the storage is quite fast but resolve cant get the required bandwith on a film project .so was searching for options to connect to the storage from mac through fiber with out buying a licence for conforming and also if i have a local storage it would be better as the activity on the main storage would not affect the performance of resolve.
