Uncompressed External Recorder?
on Mar 26, 2009 at 6:54:44 am

Hey Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any recorder that can record the dual HD SDI from the varicam 3700? I am looking to take advantage of the 4:4:4 coloring space. But in the recorder what I really want to find is a Mountable recorder to the camera.

Thanks

Haven't seen anything that's smaller than a desktop machine with a RAID and a Kona 3. But I'm sure something exist$$$s.

Right now you are looking at 3 basic devices ( there are more - these are the 3 most reliable ones on the market today)

Codex, S.two and RaveHD that have portable capture solutions that can capture as uncompressed, DPX or even QT streams.

S.two is the tapeless capture solution used for Zodiac and Benjamin Button, codex is very popular in europe. RAVE solutions have been used on Sin City, the 300 and the like and is a big mover in the 3D space.

S.two will launch the OB-1 uncompressed recorder at NAB. In a press release today, they announced a global sales & marketing partnership with Band Pro and the units will be available following the show.
Sizewise, OB-1 measures 8x5x4 inches and weighs 6 pounds. It supports the feature sets of virtually all digital film cameras including the Sony F23 and 35, Arri's D-21 and the Panasonic 3700; records uncompressed 4:4:4 RGB from 2 cameras simultaneously to DPX files with metadata support, requires less than 28 watts of camera power and is priced lower than any full-featured recorder (compressed or uncompressed)currently on the market. S.two is in Booth SL-12005 so you can see it this coming week if you are at the show.

Not available yet, but (hopefully) soon, is the new S.Two OB-1

(preliminary data here: http://www.stwo-corp.com/new_page_4.htm )

Not quite as small, but still pretty cool (and I suspect a little less $$) is the KG UDR100 (also coming soon, but I've tested a working unit):

Both of these units recognize the VFR flags from the 3700. Not quite uncompressed, but pretty small is the little Codex Portable:
