1280 x 1080 Footage???
on Aug 5, 2013 at 3:11:22 pm

Hi all,

I recently received some P2 footage to edit with. I transcoded it through Log and Transfer to Apple Pro Res.

Under format the compressor says it is DVCPRO HD 1080p30, but the actual pixel aspect ratio ended up being 1280x1080.

When I dragged the footage into a sequence, it prompted me to match the sequence to the settings of the clip. What resulted was a squashed 4:3 image.

I changed the sequence settings to DVCPRO HD 1080p30, dragged the clip back in, and it seems to look fine. However the aspect ratio is still 1280x1080.

I made a self contained QT test of the clip based on this new sequence, and when I clicked on "get info", it says the clip is now 1920x1080.

Is it correct that while I am working it will be 1280x1080 but during output is stretches the image to 1920x1080? Is this what happens to this kind of footage?

Thanks for any guidance on this. I greatly appreciate it.

Best,

Pete

Hi Pete,
1280x1080 is anamorphic HD. It has a different pixel aspect ratio. Just like D1 footage is still 16x9 when only 720 pixels wide, same with the HD. Don't worry, its completely normal.

Here's how to import it into Adobe Premiere cs6.

I would always recommend transcoding the footage into what you want. Unless you're trying to do 60 frames a second then I would bring the footage in through the card structure.

I used to shoot p2 and had the same issues. So I started transcoding the footage before editing, into full 1920x1080 and everything was groovy.
