Af100 Codec upgrade
on Aug 22, 2012 at 8:55:38 pm

I will be shooting a 50min film (mostly hand held realty style look) and want to know your opinions on the new af100 codec upgrade.

Is the new ps 1080p upgrade worth it?
Is acdhv 2.0 28mbs noticably better that the current?
Is it better to edit (CS6)

Thanks
Richard

The new update is for 1080p60 at 28mbit. It does not affect bitrate of 30p, 25p and 24p shooting modes. (PH)

But if you want 1080p60 there is no other option.

My main concern is shooting and editing with the avchd codec, not that its bad but I am afraid of getting bogged down in editing I have a good laptop but still the af100 codec is kind of heavy. Also shooting hand help makes me fear banding. I kind of think that the upgrade will take care of this..

Would buying a recorder like the matrox or BM shuttle be a better route?
thanks

[Richard Cardonna] " I kind of think that the upgrade will take care of this.."

It will not sadly (we ALL wish it did.) 28mbit is only for 60p (not 60p in a 24/30p wrapper - aka overcrank).

We have not seen many instances of serious banding, especially handheld. It will always depending on what the camera is pointing at; the finer the gradient the more chances there are of banding.

With the Hyperdeck you trade CPU requirements for disk requirements (space and throughput.) Banding will be minimally reduced but not enough to really warrant the time and expense if that's what you're after.

If p30 looks OK at 25Mbps, you would need 50Mbps to look the same good at p60.
The extra data rate that they added means nothing.

I use Toast to convert the MTS files into quicktimes. Avid then creates MXF files upon import. For FCP, I'd just convert them into Apple Pro Res.

Have you considered a HyperDeck shuttle and recording in ProRes? Too far out of budget for that? If that's something reachable that will give you near the best quality you can get from the AF100 and it will be edit friendly in every NLE.

I convert to Pro Res LT and edit on Premiere Pro. I don't know how well this would work on your system.
