HMC 150, SD card, log transfer
on Jun 16, 2010 at 7:21:58 pm

This is a first time, worst nightmare
I have never had a problem before, When I went to log and transfer to get my clips, nothing showed up....I tested another SD card and no problem. They came into the log and transfer - I can play the clips perfectly on the camera. So I know they are on the card. If anyone has any idea on what is happening any tricks to get this information I would appreciate it. I checked in with the FCP forum too. Now I am maybe hoping someone who has the HMC 150 might have a trick up their sleeve....or I;m up a creek.

Have you tried using Divergent Media's ClipWrap utility?

I am not Mac based, but I've heard good things from other FCP editors using ClipWrap to import their AVCHD clips on their Macs, without being forced to transcode to ProRes right away.

ClipWrap

Another software to try is Cineform's NEO SCENE software, which will transcode your AVCHD video to a .MOV file encoded with the Cineform CODEC. The big advantage to using the Cineform CODEC is that the exact same file will be editable using both Mac and PC based video editors. I use NEO SCENE so I can share files I edit with Sony Vegas Pro on the PC, with Final Cut Pro editors working on the Mac.

NEO SCENE

Thanks for the recommendations. For now, quick and dirty I have captured on Vegas and will probably make them mov and avi see which works the best for FCP. I will hold onto the SD Card until I figure out what the deal is. It's b- roll so I am very happy it was not something so special that I would want to do myself in....

Try a different computer or a different card reader or try reading directly from the camera in hard drive mode.

I did try from Camera in PC Mode. I also have a special USB. drive that takes SD cards, which is what I usually use. When that did not work, I went to camera. I have not tried in a different computer. If I do it would be PC.

If you are using Sony Vegas Pro 9 ( latest version is 9.0e ), you should use the "Device Explorer" interface ( found under VIEW, or press CTRL + ALT + 7 ) to import your videos because it will automatically stitch longer multipart AVCHD sections into one single file when it imports.

Hi Suzin,

Was this a new SDHC card? Even though a brand-new card may appear ready to go when put in the camera, it's important to format the card IN the camera for the best operation.

Actually that is a good point. The card is about 6 months old and I did forget to format. However, when I viewed the card on the camera there where two other shoots on the card. One of them I couldn't download (which I had forgotten) one did download well. Again, I forgot to format it did not down load. What is intersting (Yes formatting is important, it might be the answer) There where three differrent shoots, two would not log and transfer and one did without a hitch. I ended up using Vegas to download the footage, making AVI and bringing what I needed into FCP. It's a round about way, shrug. It worked - it was outtakes so I feel I missed the bullet. I now have a note reminding me to fomat, so that never happens again. I am wondering if it is a card defect....or this is going to be one of those bugs that will happen once in a while with the SD cards. I know a lot of people hate them and stick to mini tapes.

Just bought an HMC 154 (same as 150) and having some problems importing in FCP.
The clips are on the card, they display and play correctly in the log and transfer window but only the short ones (few minutes) ingest correctly, the long ones (around 30 minutes) go through the process and fail at the end (red exclamation mark).
FCP has to be set to import Apple ProRes 422, other than that I am still battling with transferring the files correctly.
