ok so i have macbook pro 2.8ghz, 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 9600m gt, 500gb hd 7200rpm, external firewire 800 hd 1tb 7200, i am using final cut studio 3 to edit footage from my panasonic gh1 and panasonic hmc150. no matter which camera i use, after i successfully import the files, i put one on the time line and begin to edit, i make any changes, render it down then preview it. every time i try to preview i get an error about dropped frames, like clock work. even if i just put the raw video on the timeline with no effects it still drops frames i am recording in 1080 24p on both cameras. i have a 15in macbook pro, would it make a difference if i purchased a new 17in with the expresscard slot and i used esata to connect my external hard drive. or maybe even look into something like the matrox mx02 mini or le, would something like this stop the frames from dropping ?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

Convert your clips to ProRes and you'll be all set. The native file formats- H.264 are not optimized for editing in FCP.
