Capturing from a DVX100AE PAL in FCP
on Feb 7, 2009 at 10:44:13 am

I'm trying to capture some DVX100AE recordings in 25p PAL on my new MacBook Pro in Final Cut Pro 6 using the "Log & capture".

I don't know what I am doing wrong, because the quality of the captured video is horrible. All is very jaggy and pixelated. It must be some problem with fields of something, but so far all my tests showed the same result. Check the following example:

While this is how it looks in my PC capturing in Premiere:

Is there anybody here who can help me get better results? I'm a newbie both in Mac and FCP, so I must have overlooked something here.

Thanks.

What is that from QT Player, FCP or a tv output. Make sure your viewing settings are set to full. It's hard not to capture anything but straight across DV unless you try really hard to make it something else.

I am having another problem here. I got FCP to capture and show the video ok, but I get errors exporting the video. Although I set all options to best quality and Progressive I get fields in the output video and bad quality.

Check the following captures to see how bad is the resulting video (QTplayer) comparing to the FCP viewer window:

and these are the settings I used:

I'll appreciate some help here, because this is driving me nuts.

yeah but you didn't answer my question. In FCP you are looking at a half-resolution RGB proxy of your YUV footage. So gauging it's quality in a window in FCP is pointless. You should be looking at a broadcast quality monitor in HD-SDI or SDI for the actual appearance.

And in QuickTime Player you're also looking at half-resolution until you switch on high-quality. That's in Window>Show Movie Properties>Video Track>Visual Settings- Check High Quality.

"High quality" is checked. My problem seems to be with the fields output instead of progressive.

Well if it's 25p you shouldn't be exporting with fields- should be set to none/progressive.

It's already set to Progressive, however the Field dominance was set to Lower. I chenged it to None and the fields are gone, but I still get a pixelated output video. Even in the FCP windows it looks pixelated. Check the following capture, the right window is the captured video, while the left window is the sequence.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Post a screenshot of your capture and sequence settings.

I found the error. I had the clip Speed changed to 200% and "Frame blending" active. Unchecking "Frame blending" removed the fields and now exporting is ok. Thanks for the help.
