friends,

i just recently bought a macbook pro(laptop) 15 inch with retina display.

It does not have a firewire port;

I have a panasonic hvx200 and need to ingest p2 files.

Is there an adapter out there? which one should i buy?

Apple has a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A

Then from there you need a Firewire 800 to 400 connector such as-

I have also seen it suggested to just use USB. Would be interested in opinions on that route.

Whoops. For some reason, posts below on USB did not appear until after I had posted my question. I conclude USB is not a great option.

Noah,

both cables worked perfectly. thank you.

I have another question for you;

My p2 data uploads seamlessly in Final cut pro x, but when i try and view the quicktime files outside of fcp in my finder window i get a message saying "a required codec isn't available"...

Do i need to install the p2 software that came with the p2, or do i need something new?

Once again Noah, thank you in advance, you are most helpful.

You do not need FW to offload your footage. For tape, you need it. You can use USB. The PCD2 will eliminate the need to use your camera as a source.

The Apple site has a Thunderbolt to Firewire cable for 429. Got mine at the Apple store. It does provide firewire 800 interface and requires adapter which is readily available.

Steve (above) is right; as per user reports, USB is available as import direct from the cam.
However, as per The HFX Book, by Barry Green, "While it may or may not function to use the HVX in USB Device mode with a Macintosh computer, it is not recommended or guaranteed; when connecting to a Mac, please use the 1394 terminal instead" (Green, 253).

As reported in other posts in this forum, and on the FCP forum; USB import is painfully slow (never tried personally).

When the new "anti-FW" Macs came out (WTF!?!), I invested in an AJ-PCS060 This ia a discontinued item, but is widely available on eBay. Besides being a field depository for up to 60GB of P2 media, it is a great USB capture device. My inport/capture times (straight into an FCP timeline) are very fast.

For studio work this is ideal, and for field work, it means that my 4x8gb P2 capacity is tripled. Also, ingest to the onboard HD is faster than capture to FCP (or so it seems).
Hope this helps,
Eric

Eric,

thanks for the help.

Now that i have the right cables, my p2 data ingests seamlessly into FCP!

Question though; When i try to view my .mov files outside of fCP, i get a message "required codec is not available".

Do i need additional software? or perhaps install the original p2 software that came with the card?

thank again!

Make sure you have installed the additional codecs from Apple- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4714
