DVCPRO HD explained please?
on Jan 16, 2012 at 4:33:01 pm

I just bought a used HVX200 and I'd like a simple to understand explanation of what DVCPRO really is. I've read that it's HD and then I read it's not really HD. What the hell??

Also, I'm currently using Adobe Premiere CS4 on WIN 7. Are P2 cards compatible? is there any special software required? I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere else. You all have the best answers here!

There are a couple flavors of DVCPRO;

DVCPRO - which is SD, like DVCAM and DV.
DVCPRO50 - which is SD and similar in quality to Digibeta.

DVCPROHD (or DVCPRO100) is High Definition.

You can shoot only SD to the Tape in your camera.
You can shoot SD or HD to the P2 cards.

You need a P2 driver for your computer to recognize the cards.
Please look up the tapeless workflow here on the cow.

I downloaded the driver software, but this big long list comes up. You have to check off which ones you want to install. I haven't a clue as to which ones to check!!! I want to be able to use the camera as a card reader, since I don't have a sep. one.

So, with that, which driver do I install?? Can I call someone here and have them talk me through this???? I'm not tech savvy when it comes to this P2 card stuff!!

Thanks,
Phil

That's probably the list of all the P2 cameras that Panasonic manufactures. Put a check mark next to the HVX 200 and then continue installing. Remember to install the Panasonic P2 Viewer and CMS to offload the clips you shoot. You can get it from the same site that you got the drivers.

Duh...I see that now. I thought it meant something else, but on closer examination I can see the model #s now.

Thanks,

Think you'll be better served by upgrading your NLE to the latest version...

I'm trying Premiere Pro CS5.5 now, but the USB software for the P2 still won't install right and I can't afford to buy the newer NLE now anyway. Why in hell is this software so damned expensive???

Well if you're making money with it most of the NLE's out there are pretty cheap, especially compared to all the hardware you really need to do pro-level work. But if it's just hobby stuff then yeah I guess it's relatively expensive.
