Well that's not entirely true. There is a function called ALC (auto level control) in the recording set up menu which when set to on supposedly reduces distortion at high input levels, although it does say in the manual that it doesn't change the audio signal recording level.

ALC is like limiter, not auto audo

Yes exactly, however when you are using the inputs 1 & 2 for external sources, the onboard stereo mic automatically gets routed to tracks 3 & 4 and if you have ALC on it does act as a control for the level of the onboard mic as there is no manual control in that situation.

yes, if you write in 4 audio track mode
only DVCPro 50, and HD modes

but if you work in DVCpro or DV or write on tape in DV mode (48 kHz)?
