1080i/24p shooting issue
on Oct 7, 2010 at 3:29:50 am

hi,

i recently shot some talking heads in the 1080i/24p format on the hvx.
i shot at shutter 1/120
in fcp it says that the compression is dvcpro HD30p , which i thought was weird.

when i play back the clips - there are lines in the movements of the subjects, looks like interlace line-problem or something.

this is the first time i have seen this problem as i have shot in this format before and nothing like this has ever happened.

thanks for reading, any help would be HIGHLY appreciated!

Read this. IT's really old but still applies to how 24p is recorded to DVCPro HD in 1080i.

http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/index.html#24pRecording

Basically, you are shooting 24p with pulldown. You need to remove that pulldown to get 23.98 media.

The easiest way to do this is to shoot 24pA so that FCP will automatically remove the pulldown on log and transfer.

Thanks so much, that's a really informative article.
At which point in the fcp workflow do I remove the pulldown?

If you shot 24pA, it will be done automatically ny the log and transfer process.

If you shot regular 24p, then you can use Compressor and the reverse telecine function.

Or you can just edit @ 29.97 and keep it easy.

I'm going through compressor now and can't seem to find the reverse telecine function, would it be possible to tell me, in your experience, what to output (one clip for example) and how to reverse the telecine??
...thanks for all the help

Thanks so much,

I ran the recipe for reverse telecine and it's still got lots of lines in the movement of the image. I tried compressor "8-bit uncompressed" and that cleaned the lines completely. But I have to mix this footage with RED footage...so hopefully it will take.

...any suggestions other than what I've done and the recipe you gave??

...thanks for all the help by the way. HIGHLY APPRECIATED

I realize I forgot an important step, sorry. You know how you mentioned that FCP labels the footage as 30P? Well, that's obviously not right. what is happening, though, is that Compressor thinks your footage is p, when it's really i.

So, in Compressor single click on the thumbnail to bring up the a/v attributes for the clip. Change the field dom from progressive to Upper, then Compressor will process your footage correctly.

Hi there! I'm jumping on this strand as i'm also confused which FCP codec to use after shooting HVX 200 in1080i/24p. The default codec, as mentioned above, is DVCPro HD 1080p30. I noticed on this strand that editing in 30fps is ok. I just want to confirm with someone that has a little experience with this before I go ahead with this default codec or select another.

Did you shoot 24p or 24pA?

Before you start editing, make sure all of the clips in the browser have an upper field first dominance (you can change all selected clips at once), and then use a 1080i DVCPro HD sequence.

Clips already in a sequence will not have the field dominance changed so you can either match frame and reedit them, or change them in the timeline one by one in the sequence.

Hi Jeremy,

Back to my original thread and thank you for your help. I was able to change the field dominance to upper before pulling the clip into the timeline. However, in order to make sure I am editing in the proper codec, I can only see options to edit in DVC Pro HD 1080i50, 1080i60, 1080p25, and 1080p30. Please let me know which codec you think will work best. Thank you!
