HVX200 Transfer times very slow
on Mar 31, 2010 at 3:38:46 am

Hi,

1. I've done a number of test transferring clips from my hvx200 via firewire to final cut using log and transfer. Using different formats, (720-30pn, 720p30, 720p60, etc...) all transferred slowly. Close to realtime, sometimes slower. Example: 6.5 minutes to transfer a 7 minute 720-30pn file. The P2 cards are 2 x 16gb E-series. From all I've been reading, the transfer times are supposed to be tons faster than realtime...

What am I doing wrong? How can I improve my workflow?

Thanks,
Ari

Your times are normal for your workflow.

From Panasonic:
What is the maximum transfer rate for these P2 cards?

The "maximum" transfer rate for the new E Series card is 1.2 Gbps. Please note that transfer speeds are based on several factors, including computer and disk/RAID configuration, copy method or application software and potential network traffic.

The PCD35 will transfer a card 1.5 times faster than FW800.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the answer. Although it is pretty scary as I will have to transfer about 5 hours worth of footage every night.

Would I have better success with a Duel adapter? Or is the PCD35 really the only option?

Thanks!

It should be much faster than that with a Duel Adapter but be aware that you have to reboot each time you plug it in and it can be quirky. I am experiencing about 12-14 minutes for a 16 GB card. Be sure to verify all your footage before you re-format your cards.

The documentation seems a bit inconsistent with regards to the PCD35. In some places it says

"A new five slot P2 solid state memory drive with an ExpressCard interface that will dramatically increase simultaneous access to P2 content on ExpressCard equipped notebook or desktop computers."

This would be fine because I have an expresscard equipped macbook pro.

However, in other places it says

"Panasonic’s AJ-PCD35 Memory Card Drive is a P2 drive with a PCI Express interface. It connects to a Windows PC or Mac with the supplied board"

That is an other story, I macbook pros do not have a PCI express interface...

so.... what's the deal?

The PCD35P comes with a PCI Express board that you have to install in your computer. We just put one in a PC and works great. But I don't see how it would work in a laptop.

I use the duel adapter. I also use ShotPut Pro from Imagine Products (highly recomended). My transfer times even with E series cards are still around 1:1.

I am hoping the Qio from Sonnet will be faster when connected to Sata drives.

Wow! This is so depressing! I don't understand how a duel adapter using a expresscard slot is more or less equal in speed to FW400?

I'm going to meet with a rental company later today to find out some options for my trip. It would be a huge shame to get back from filming at midnight and then spend the next 5 hours transferring footage only to make up at 7 and film again.

I'll keep you posted with my findings later today.

Hey Steve,

What format are you recording with that is giving you the 1:1 results?
I assume by 1:1, you mean a 10-minute file is taking 10 minute to transfer?

Thanks!

720/60, 720/30pn and 1080/60. 32gb E series and 64 GB E series cards. Offloading to two fw 800 external drives.

I do recall my 16 GB R series offloading in 8 minutes with DV footage.

I would recommend the AJ-PCD20 5 slot reader for your trip or the new Sonnet Qio. It has 2 slots.

for what it's worth, I've found the USB connection to be faster.

Thanks Will. I'll test that out as well.

I finally got the chance to test out the different options for transferring.
Tests were done on a 16gb e-series card with 20:40 of footage shot at 720 30pn.

Firewire400: 9:10
USB 2.0: 5:56
Duel Adapter: 4:20

If we multiply that out to 3 hours of footage for example..

Firewire400: 82 min
USB 2.0: 54 min
Duel Adapter: 39 min

Thank you all for your help and advice!
