Hello,

Can someone please post the settings to have the Panasonic AG-HPX300 record with the FS-100 Recorder?. When I turn on the camera the P2 icon keeps on blinking and there is no image, just a black screen with the time code running, any suggestions please?.

Thanks.

You are outputting DVCPRO HD, not AVC-Intra?

Hello Jeff,

Thanks for your time, I have the camera set to record DVCPRO HD, since the FS-100 does not record in AVC Intra format, I had tried several setting but there is no result, do you have the camera and the FS-100 settings to make them work properly?.

Once again, thanks for your time.

Javier.

Why not post all your settings, make it easier on the people answering.

The FireStore is an extremely picky device, you need to read through its manual and the FAQ on the website and get a complete understanding on the workflow. There are several ways to think you are getting an image but you are not.

Yes, FS-100 is DVCPRO only, AVC-Intra does is not output via FireWire from camera. Make sure camera's frame rate is NOT in a Native mode, or FireWire output won't be active.

I don't own an HPX300, have only used my FireStores with my HDX900 and HPX170. Here is my setup for an HDX900/FS-100(don't know how much is the same for an HPX300):

PANASONIC HDX900 w/FIRESTORE FS-100 using Quicktime PN mode

Menu setup of HDX900:

MAIN MENU>SYSTEM SETTING>SYSTEM MODE: 720/59.94P

MAIN MENU>SYSTEM SETTING>CAMERA MODE: 24P*

OPTION MENU>OPTION>FRAME RATE UB: MENU

MAIN MENU>VTR MENU>TC/UB>VITC UB MODE: FRAME RATE

Switch Position of HDX900:

TCG: F-RUN**

*720/30P also available for PN mode
**TCG: F-RUN only for 24P, TCG: F-RUN or REC RUN for 30P

OPTION MENU is accessed by pressing the MENU button while holding down the LIGHT button simultaneously.

Menu setup of FS-100:

1. HDD MODE>DVCPRO HD

2. DV FORMATS>QUICKTIME PN

3. SETUP>TC EXT

4. SETUP>VFR MODE>24P***

5. CONTROL>TAPELESS

***720/30P also available for PN mode
Note: VFR mode will default to OFF at power down, must put back to 24P.

For Record Status, Press DISPLAY button to see; ā€œ720/24Pā€, matching TC numbers w/Camera, ā€œVFā€ mode.

PRESS STOP BEFORE POWER DOWN AFTER ANY RECORDING

End of shoot: (optional)

6. UTILITIES>MAKE REF MOV. (combines clips longer than 2:18ea)

There are (2) 24 settings on the camera, 24p and 24pA.

Now once again you have not posted your settings.

If you want your clips to be 23.98 for editing I would recommend setting the camera to 1080i/24pA and the FS 100 to P2, they you use Log and Transfer to remove the Advanced Pull Down.

Hello Michael,

I appreciate your time and help, here I am posting the settings that works for me, I had tried 24p and 30p but they produce a strange type of motion on the video as I reported on the previous link, I don't think the FS-100 has anything to do with it, since the video signal comes like that from the camera itself.

*Camera:
System Mode: 1080 59.94i
Rec Format: DVCPRO HD 60i
Camera mode: 60i
Record Function: Normal
1394 control: EXT
1394 CMD SEL: REC_P

*FS-100
Record: Normal
HDD Mode: DVCPRO REC
DV Formats: QuickTime PN
SETUP: TC EXT / TC NON DROP / STOP FRAME
Functions: FA TAPELESS
Control: TAPELESS

Thanks for your time.

Javier,

You cannot use QT PN with 1080/60i. Native mode only works with 720/24P and 30P. Make sure VFR is off. I don't know what that "Stop Frame" setting is for on the FS-100 you list. Make sure, if shooting 24P or 30P, that you set the camera's shutter to 180 degrees(half) or 1/48th, 1/60th, respectively.

Hello Jeff,

The shutter settings makes a great difference, but not convinced of motion quality, DVCPRO HD 24p is made from the 1080 60i signal?.

Thanks.

Javier,

Have you ever watched a pan in a film based motion picture? 24fps will not have the smooth motion of 60fps. The electronic shutter in a video camera set at twice the frame rate will help eliminate smearing, but can't make up for the lack of temporal resolution of 24fps vs. 60fps. Those who want a film look shoot 24fps, those who want that video news/sports/soap opera look shoot 60fps(or 60 fields per second.)

When shooting 720/24p, it is 24p over 60p at the HD SDI output and recorded onto the P2 cards. In post, you need to do a 3:2 pulldown to get rid of the redundant frames. When shooting 1080/24p, it is 24p over 60i, and, again, the redundant frames are thrown out in post.

The best approach for P2 recording of 720/24p in DVCPRO HD and AVC-Intra is to shoot in Native mode, where only the actual frames needed are recorded onto P2. In 1080/24p, Native mode is available in AVC-Intra, but not in DVCPRO HD. In all cases, there is no Native mode via HD SDI out, as most display devices would no accept a 24p Native signal. 720/60p and 1080/60i are the only official HD formats for delivery in the U.S.

Recommend you read some of the Panasonic white papers. I also recommend you shoot in AVC-Intra 100, which is a progressive Native codec. Dump the FS-100, buy adequate P2 card capacity and quality and reliability will be improved.

Hello Jeff,

I completely agree with you, I was trying to take advantage of the capacity in the FS-100, but P2 cards are the way to go in order to take advantage of the AVC INTRA 100 format. By the way, I was shooting a test scene with Formatt Skin Enhancement Filters, great quality from my point of view and nice color saturation, what do you think of them?.

I greatly appreciate your time!.

Thanks,

Javier L.
