New E Series 64gb card takes DOUBLE the transfer time?
on Jan 27, 2010 at 4:15:40 pm

We just bought a new E series card and I was all excited about the 1.2gbs transfer rate from the 800mbs from our other cards. So I put in a full 64gb card into my AJ-PCS060 to transfer via USB (as always) and it gave me an estimated 2 hour transfer! This is double of what I am used to, I usually get 35-40 minutes for a 32gb card which is roughly 1gb per minute.

What gives?

According to the specs, the "E" series should faster than the original series as far as write time is concerned but transfer time should not be any slower. Although I haven't put a stopwatch to it, I have found the transfer time of the 64GB "E" series, using the Panasonic PCD 35, to be extremely fast.

Well, you have double the media, so that will add some time. ANd I'm not sure the AJ-PCS060 has e series firmware? If so you should update it.

You're right Jeremy but the time is doubled based on minutes per gigabyte. There wasn't firmware updates for that reader unfortunately.

[Matt Steeves] "You're right Jeremy but the time is doubled based on minutes per gigabyte."

Right so it's twice as much time for twice as much material?

Also, since the reader isn't 'officially' supported (even though it might work) I am not sure if it's an accurate test.

What happens if you use the camera as a litmus?

No I was getting 1gb a minute before and now it's closer to 500mb per minute

Did you go through with the whole transfer?

You are transferring USB, what do you expect? FW 800 should be a little faster. I'd be interested to find out the transfer times on the Qio (available 2/5) via esata.

I too have to get used to the transfer time between my 64 and 32 gb cards compared to my 16 gb. It's 2x to 4x the data. Bottom line, I don't have to offload on the job.

I don't seem to be making myself clear. My issue is a change in transfer speeds with the only variable being the card. I have always used that reader, I have always used USB. I am aware that I am transferring double the data, but the rate that data transfers is twice as slow.

The P2 Store was designed to offload 4 and 8 GB cards. The HD in the AJ-PCS060 drive is 60 GB and you are trying to offload 64 GB. If I'm not mistaken, the maximum you can fit on the AJ-PCS060 is 32GB. And that would be from offloading a 32GB card.

I don't use the internal HD, just transfer to a high speed SATA drive

I'd try the transfer with your camera to see if it goes better. Then you can start blaming the card reader.

I have used the P2 Store as a card reader and it was always glacially slow. I have dumped full 64 GB cards with my PB G4 in 30 minutes flat. This doesn't explain the difference in times that you are experiencing but I would find a faster way to dump your cards anyway. A cheap PC or used PB G4 for $300.00 would probably alleviate all of your issues. USB is extremely slow when dumping P2 whether through the P2 Store or through the camera.

Dan,
My G4 Powerbook 1.67gh downloads a 16gb in about 16min. or 1 gb/min. FW800 to a 7200rpm HD.
How can I achieve 2gb/min or about a half hour for a full 64gb dnld? It takes me almost an hour to dnld a 64gb P2 card.

thx,

Hi Chris:

Hmm...not sure why your setup is so slow compared to mine. I have not yet tried a 64Gb P2 card but my PB can definitely do a 16Gb in less than 8 minutes and a 32GB is about 15 minutes.

I am not even using a 7200 RPM drive and am using FW400, not even 800.

1. How full is the drive?
2. Which OS version and how much RAM are in your PB?

I have never done anything special to the PB, I don't even use it anymore, it is now my wife's computer and I only use it when I shoot since my MBP and the Duel stopped playing nice when I updated the MBP to Leopard. PB is, of course, still running Tiger.

Dan,
I use Leopard,HD Log and verify. I use FW800 bus powered 7200rpm 2.5 drives with nothing else on them in the field. Ram upgraded to max. Perhaps you skip the verification stage? That would save some time.

Yes, that must be it, I just copy over the files and manually open them to make sure that they play.

Old thread, but I just tested a 32GB E-Series card against an old 4GB A-Series one.

I rolled 5 minutes of color bars in DVCPRO50 on both cards, then transferred from my camera via USB.

4GB H-Series = 20MB/s
32GB E-Series = 7MB/s

WTF?
