editing p2 footage with a macbook pro
on Nov 7, 2009 at 2:42:24 pm

Hello,

I'm about to work in a documentary that is going to be shooted with P2 - DVCPRO HD 25p - and I'm going to edit at the same time in a MacBook Pro. Do you have any suggestions about the equipment I should have? (like HD, Macbook Pro model, etc.).

Then I'll finish the editing in a Desktop Mac Pro QuadCore 2.5 gHZ, 4.5 GB Ram, is there any problem with P2 and a non Intel Based Mac?

Thank you,

Vanessa

Where's the non-Intel part? Both machines you mention sound like Intels to me...

The mac pro is a non intel based computer.

[Vanessa Pimentel] "mac pro is a non intel based computer. "

Then it isn't a MAC PRO. It might be a G5, which looks like a Mac Pro. But a MacPro, by definition, is an Intel.

BUT...that's nitpicking. YOu do not need an Intel to edit DVCPRO HD P2. I had been editing that format for 3 years on my G5. And the DVCPRO HD format for 5 years...starting on a G4.

You're right. It is a G5 QuadCore 2.5 gHZ and I've been working in it for 3 years and it's a very good machine. I'm using it on this documentary project. Anyway, first I'll be editing on a macbook pro (during the shootings), is there any specific issue, like necessary RAM or minimum processor?

Thank you,
Vanessa

Nope. Just make sure you have at least 4GB as standard for FCP. Again, I edited P2 using a G4 laptop...

Shane - you seem to know the ropes on all these readers for P2. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard not knowing that my Dual adapter would not work with it after the upgrade. I read your posts stating I just use a G4 powerbook. I am going to go to Ebay and pick up an old G4 but could you advise me as to the slot I will need and is there a minimum of ram and processing speed I should be requiring? I would like to pay a few hundred dollars, not over 4. Please help.

Powerbook G4's all came out with that PCMCIA slot, the one the cards fit directly into. But there are other options, as mentioned. The 1 slot P2 Reader from Panasonic, and the Sonnet QIO.
