1280 x 1080 finishing and DVD authoring

Hey there!
Hope I didn't somehow miss existing threads.

I've worked on previous P2 projects with 720p footage, without a glitch.

Just received 4.5 hours of footage (.MXFs) on a drive -- DP states it is "1080i 24p" HVX200 footage.
I'm on FCP7.

So, I believe footage to actually be "1080i 24pA", because the Import Preferences in Log & Transfer give me the "Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames" option, right? (When this is checked, ingested footage is 23.98fps. When it's unchecked, footage is 29.97. Both edit natively in FCP. Everything looks good.)

OK so far so good.

Questions:

1)
I'm concerned about the optimal way of finishing. I'm guessing I should ingest and cut at 23.98 (and not 29.97)?

After I'm done cutting, should I render it out from FCP at 1920 x 1080, in order to lay off to HDCam for Festivals? Or should I somehow down-convert (ie. to 720p) and THEN master to tape?

(PS. Filmmakers claim they may want to also print to film down the road.)

Various software (QTpro, Compressor, Toast8, but mostly my brain) all seem to be confused by the aspect ratio (which leads me to #2).

2)
What is the best way to make DVDs that maintain the aspect ratio (with letterboxing)?

Normally with 720p OR even RED 2:1 footage, I can just export a full rez movie from FCP and drop it into Toast 8. OR, I can easily nest my footage in a FCP timeline with desired settings and bounce it out that way -- then Toast usually adjusts the image, encodes it at highest rez possible and letterboxes it for you.

(This is just for quick and dirty DVDs for dailies and preview cuts, so heavy compression isn't a concern. When higher quality DVDs are needed, I'll probably go the Compressor --> DVDsp route.)

HOWEVER, all my DVDs are coming out squashed, stretched, or cropped. The programs seem to be getting confused by the 1280 x1080 aspect ratio, and clearly my settings are wrong.

What am I doing wrong?

I know that is sort of a long series of questions. Thanks again for reading, and for any insights.

Best wishes,
Susan

Export to a 16:9 NTSC 24p MPEG-2 in Compressor and it should come out fine.

Hey Noah,
Thanks for your note. Yes, my Compressor settings were throwing me off. Everything does indeed work fine.

Just curious --
Any idea why Compressor's preview doesn't represent the correct aspect ratio? Does it not properly read the anamorphic image or something (ie. in the way that FCP does) - or is this a preference I'm missing?

Best,
Susan
