Solid playback with P-2 viewer software...
on Aug 29, 2009 at 1:15:08 am

Hello to all...

We're having trouble using Panasonic's P-2 viewer on a PC being able to play completely through clips longer than 4GB..
files are DVC-PRO HD
The footage is fine when imported into FCP - or even Adobe Premier..

But, right now, screen displays a black flash between each 4-GB
file... i.e. clips longer than 5 minutes..

Otherwise, footage looks great - plays back great- except for the
black flash...

Does anyone else have the same problem, and what solution have you
used other than importing into a editing program for display..

Problem is not with speed of PC, we determined it is specifically with the fact of the P2-viewer playing over a spanned clip and needing a short time to open up next file..

Suggestions appreciated...

Gary

P2 cards are formatted FAT32 which has a max file size of 4GB. I suspect what you're seeing is related to that. The flash may be occurring as the player switches from one file to the next(spans). FCP stitches these spanned files together during transfer so you end up with a smoothly playing file.

Thanks John...

That's what we thought it was also... We provide the camera rentals and moving into data management ( out of necessity ) for our clients..

So, we don't get to see the project through to post. We have clients looking over our shoulder during off-loading and confirmation of playback. The black flash scares everyone...

The FCP and Adobe premier programs take care of it, but we're looking to see if there is any other P-2 type viewer that can accurately span the 4-GB files to provide smooth playback..

I'd love to hear if any others on this board experience the same
hick-up during in-field playback ( without using a edit program )

Tnx.. Gary

We use Imagine Products HD Log to screen clips in the field after off-loading P2 cards. The way we shoot we always end up with short clips that don't exceed 4GB. I don't recall seeing any black flashes. They probably have a demo version you could try. Here's a link http://www.imagineproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&pro...
