Any thoughts on controlling file names on P2 cards?

I just tried adding a user clip name to my video files. I have a properly formatted SD card and have created a file name at metadata>property>user clip name (my user clip name was "july"). I shot a few clips and pulled them into FCP 5.01. The counter is working - but file names are still randomly named: 0001MF, 0002DP, 0003LB, etc.

Will greatly appreciate anyone's help!

Richard

The UserClipName is stored in the metadata and does not name the files themselves.

You need to make sure that the camera is using "type 2" metadata first. Then, to use this metadata in FCP, you will need to upgrade to FCP7 or use a program like Raylight or MXF4mac.

All previous versions of FCP do not read P2 metadata. FCP7 is the first version to read the user clip name field.

So is there any way to prename clips prior to shooting?

Clips names can't be set, it's the User Clip Name that can show up in FCP instead of the real file name.

Don't change the clip names, this will corrupt your P2 file structure.

[Richard Jernigan] "So is there any way to prename clips prior to shooting?"

Yes, you can preload metadata to the camera so that every shot has all sorts of great information.

Check this out first, and then write back with questions:

Having read the PDF, it appears I need a P2 Viewer to add a User Clip Name.

I'm a Mac user, and I don't see Mac P2 Viewer at the Panasonic site (https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm).

However, I heard that the HPX-170 allows a user to create a UCN inside the camera.

Any thoughts on either of these?

Thanks,

Richard

You can use P2CMS on the Mac (free from Panasonic)

or check out a new metadata editor called P2 Flow:

http://mxf4mac.com/p2-flow

It's coming very soon.

P2CMS will also save metadata files that you can save to your camera as well.

I've just figured it out.

I had set up a UCN in Metadata>Property but had not turned Record on at Metadata>Record. When you have a SD formatted disk in the camera, have Type2 switched ON and Record switched ON, the camera allows you to lay down a UCN as the file name followed by a four digit number.

Thank-you everyone for your input.
