HPX-301 (UK) 300 (USA) black dot noise

I was reviewing the Panasonic HPX-301 when I came across black dancing dots at 9dB. I have had to suspend the video review till I get answers from Panasonic Japan if they can do anything about this unacceptable noise. Today a college and myself looked at -3dB and 0dB to discover the noise is still there in the shadows. You can't possibly make any HD top notch production with this camera as it stands at the moment I only hope Panasonic Japan can do something about this.

Can you post a second or two of a ProRes file?

Ever figured out the issue. Looking at getting the camera and I am looking for any potential issues.

Firstly Jeremy, this does not show up viewing it on an LCD less than 40".
Vince I have been assured by Panasonic that they are going to get to the bottom of this issue, so my advice is as follows...
1. Do not buy from a box pusher
2. Buy from a official Panasonic dealer
3. You are paying $10K or above so ask the dealer for a test drive
4. If you can only test drive in the dealers premises make sure they have an HD-SDI 40" LCD that you can view the pictures from the camera.
5. Stick the camera to 720 60P and film darkish areas at 9dB
6. Look back at the footage...you will not miss the dancing dots if they are present.
Note. The dots do not show up in DV mode.

9db seems a bit high to me, but perhaps you are shooting in low light.

Can you post a few seconds (it's ok if you can't) i'd love to see what it looks like.

Jeremy

Couldn't follow the link but found the still on the site. While we almost never make use of gain, I'd be interested to know, if this only happens with AVC Intra?

Also, does it happen whether you are on battery or on AC?

I checked with AVC and without, as you say if you do not use gain you should be fine. I see where you are coming from but sadly both mains and battery.

Do you have a depth of field adaptor on there?

[Philip Johnston] "Today a college and myself looked at -3dB and 0dB to discover the noise is still there in the shadows"

-3db gain and reducing detail seems to get rid of most of it.
However this does tend to limit the camera somewhat.

Why give us a gain switch at all...the camcorder is officially 47dB signal to noise which is poor for a camcorder of this spec. I await a second camcorder arriving next week but I have my doubts. I was told the BBC have this camcorder for evaluation I would love to see their white paper on this baby.
