P2 Cards price reduction
on Apr 20, 2009 at 1:03:09 am

Hi All

A mole inside NAB tells me that P2 card pricing is to be cut by 50%. By introducing P2 card E series

And there is to be the introduction of an AVC ULTRA codec that supports

next generation broadcast format: 1080/60P,50P?with 4:2:2/10bit
- High quality production format: 1080/24P,?2K/24P?with 4:4:4/12bit
- 3D production format

Now if Panasonic can just get Apple to license AVCintra100 first ????????

If Apple want a fee - JUST PAY IT!!!!!! Looks like Sony did with SxX and HDCAMEX

Just read the price drop, this is great!

One thing I would like to see with apple and p2 is to be able to transfer P2-DVCProHD as ProRes that way you have a better workflow if you are fixing the different P2 formats.

1 Grand for 64GB cards, this is more like it!

It may just be my paranoia, but it's interesting to see that so much of the written information on these cards refers to a timed "5 year lifespan" rather than guaranteed use of cycles like previous cards. Do they have a used by date?
It may just be a terminology or marketing thing.
Has anyone heard or read anything that gives info on read/write cycles?

It is based upon operation hours and percentage that the cards are filled up and emptied. Nothing to do with the calendar.

So around 1825 full use cycles.
I guess the question is do they stop working when the meter runs out, or is it a bit like video heads, depends on how they are treated, a bit of luck, and if the robot making them was having a bit of Monday-itis? (Ha-Ha)

I just watched an NAB interview where the spokesman said the 5 year life was assuming that you filled the card once every day.

The E Series will give you plenty of warning before your card will expire.
