P2 Transfer Question
on Apr 16, 2009 at 4:43:04 pm

I shot a talking head on a green screen a few weeks ago using the HVX at 720P 24PN. It was properly lit and exposed. The production company/post house is now trying to key and is having a rough time-jagged edges, artifacting, etc. We're tracing the problem back as far as we can, and it appears that in the originally transferred footage (post quicktime conversion), resolution looks low-kind of like a low rez jpeg. They haven't gone to the original MXF files yet-working on finding those now. My question is this...is there somewhere between inserting the card in the reader on the set, and opening the converted quicktime in FCP6, that resolution could be degraded or additional compression could take place?

Thanks!

Chris Bierlein

Nope, all the FCP is muxing the audio and video together, while wrapping the data in a QT .mov wrapper. The codec is always DVCProHD.

What is the files displaying in the bin columns?

The files are reading what they should: DVCPRO HD, 960X720, 23.98, etc. Bitrate is 5.9mbps. A 6 second test clip is about 35MB which by my math sounds right. It just doesn't add up. The picture has all the qualities of a low rez jpeg. We just reimported a test file from the MXF and it's the same. Very puzzling.

[Chris Bierlein] "hat resolution could be degraded or additional compression could take place? "

No. It is a simple rewrap from MXF to DVCPro HD in where the audio and video get joined. The resolution is exactly the same. What are they using to key the images?

They're keying with AE and Keylight.

Any chance you can post a little bit of this footage?

Unless my eyesight got really bad all of a sudden, I don't see a problem with the footage. Looks clean except for when talent throws his arms forward at the end. Even "double-size" in QuickTime looks pretty good - though no longer sharp. But I don't see jaggies.

Perhaps it's not being viewed at full resolution on FCP.

Is your post house merely reporting this to you or have you actually seen it on their system?

Yeah, I agree. It looks OK to the eye. It's when you try to key it that the crazy jaggies become apparent. That's what's so confusing. I've done simple keys in FCP with HVX footage before (for preview purposes only) and it looks nice and clean around the edges, but this clip is a mess! Love to hear your thoughts, if you're able to try a key.

Looks like HVX footage to me, not a low res jpeg. You will have a bit of trouble keying the hair

Try keying it. That's when the problems arise. Looks way worse than other HVX keys I've done.

OK, here's a quick (a few clicks) key with Keylight and saved down to low res JPEG.

That looks clean, Jeremy.

Chris, have you worked with that post house previously? Can you upload a shot showing the jaggies?

Hey everyone, Thanks for the help and responses! Jeremy, your key looks great. Did you have jaggies at first, and then soften the edges? Apparently the post house has come up with a fix, but I don't know what it is yet. Check out the Jaggies. I did this in FCP, but the post guys were using AE and had the same result.

Softening the edges helps alot, but I'm know it shouldn't look so "jaggy" in the first place.

Thanks!

[Chris Bierlein] "Did you have jaggies at first, and then soften the edges?"

No, not jaggies like that. I applied a tiny amount of blur, but really not that much.
